mia cara amica e artista Maria Grazia Palermo.
Dedicato al suo sorriso che ha
illuminato la mia notte di Capodanno 2025 e che con i suoi dipinti non ha
mancato di suscitarmi forti emozioni. Avrei voluto vedere le sue opere dal vivo
ma, purtroppo per me e per bravura sua, sono tutte sold-out. Mi accontenterò,
allora, di rifarmi alle riproduzioni fotografiche.
La preferenza
del soggetto su cui soffermarmi è stata alquanto difficile per l'imbarazzo
della scelta ma alla fine ho deciso per quello che a mio avviso è il più
emozionante e delicatamente intrigante.
Ritratto di signora
Non sono un critico d'arte. Sono solo uno strimpellatore di romanzi ma ciò non mi impedisce di percepire emozioni davanti ad un quadro capace di trasmettermi sensazioni di sofferenza, incertezza, reattività, voglia di vivere o di morire, ritorno di spettri del passato che lottano con ciò che si vuole essere nel presente, ricordi bui che si vogliono esorcizzare con l'enigma di un sorriso intriso di nostalgia e delusione … in altre parole, di tutta l'anima che un'artista come Maria Grazia sa sapientemente proiettare nei soggetti delle sue opere.
Il primo impatto alla vista di questo dipinto è quello di chiedersi cosa stia pensando questa bella signora adagiata sul suo letto e semicoperta da un ondeggiante drappo rosso con un bicchiere semipieno in mano. Forse un pensiero erotico impetuoso e passionale come le onde di un mare agitato che lambisce ma non travolge la rena della spiaggia, un mare dipinto in cromia di rosso morbido con, si, pieghe più scure, ma anche con diffusi riflessi di luce tenue in contrasto con la decisa luminosità di un corpo che promette sensazioni paradisiache. E in tutto questo vedo il paradigma di un amplesso sublimemente amoroso, l'agape di un momento strappato alle realtà della vita affidate all'oblio di un fondo impenetrabilmente buio. Non c'è che dire! Un vero shock di emozioni che ha suscitato in me una bella botta di giovinezza. Grazie cara amica per tutto questo. Tuo affezionatissimo Oreste.

To my dear friend and artist Maria Grazia Palermo.
Dedicated to her smile, which lit up my New Year's Eve 2025, and to her paintings, which never fail to stir powerful emotions in me. I would have loved to see her works in person, but unfortunately for me—and fortunately for her—they are all sold out. I will have to content myself with the photographic reproductions.
Choosing which piece to focus on was no easy task, given the abundance of stunning works. In the end, I decided on the one that, in my view, is the most moving and delicately intriguing.
Portrait of a Lady
I am not an art critic. I am merely a dabbling novelist, yet that does not prevent me from feeling profound emotions when faced with a painting capable of conveying suffering, uncertainty, resilience, the desire to live or die, the return of past ghosts struggling with what one wants to be in the present, or dark memories that one seeks to exorcise through the enigma of a smile tinged with nostalgia and disappointment… in other words, the entirety of the soul that an artist like Maria Grazia skillfully projects onto the subjects of her works.
At first glance, this painting immediately makes one wonder what this beautiful lady, reclining on her bed and partially covered by a flowing red drapery, with a half-full glass in hand, might be thinking. Perhaps a passionate, impetuous thought, like the waves of a restless sea that lap but do not overwhelm the sandy shore—a sea painted in soft red tones, with darker folds, yet illuminated by subtle reflections of light contrasting with the radiant brightness of a body promising heavenly sensations.
Within this, I see the paradigm of a sublimely loving embrace, the agape of a moment snatched from life's realities and entrusted to the oblivion of an impenetrably dark background. There is no doubt—this is truly a shock of emotions that has gifted me a delightful surge of youthful feeling.

Alla ricerca dell'Io interiore
Eccezionale dialettica degli aspetti multipli caratteriali. Delicatezza e aggressività, fermezza e maternità. Una poliedrica e insieme armoniosa e felice unione di animo e corpo…
Stiamo parlando della pittrice Maria Grazia Palermo che abbiamo intervistato all'interno del suo studio (che è anche il suo nido) che si trova nello splendido paesino etneo di Viagrande (CT).

Candele accese, profumi che si spandono nell'aria, cuscini, le foto dei suoi cari in bella mostra sulla scrivania e poi centinaia di barattoli, tubetti, pennelli e libri. Un mondo unico dove – ci confida la stessa pittrice – non sempre accoglie gli estranei. Ciò mi lusinga…sarà perché siamo donne o perchè vuole che "entri" realmente nel suo mondo e ne conosca l'Io interiore?
Due lunghe ore di conversazione, pagine e pagine di taccuino scritte e riempite con tutto ciò che è uscito fuori da una lunga e coinvolgente intervista…
Un totale coinvolgimento, così come quello che prova lo spettatore quando si sofferma ad ammirare le sue opere: ritratti, nudi di donne, fiori, drappeggi, (abiti)maschere e maternità. Non uno stile fantasioso o sognatore, ma una carica emotiva, sociale, introspettiva e analitica davvero sorprendente. Lei, del resto non è mai stata insensibile alle problematiche sociali: è sostenitrice delle attività di varie associazioni e del club service "Kiwanis International" Catania centro, insegna musica da ventidue anni nella scuola media di Librino, e per 18 anni si è dedicata al Teatro per i ragazzi, curando la regia e la scenografia di ben 22 spettacoli musicali (nel 1997, insieme al suo gruppo, ha vinto il trofeo - primo classificato e vari altri premi - su 365 scuole partecipanti - al XII Concorso Nazionale Teatro-Scuola "I Fliaci" di Taranto.
Ma… come nasce l'amore per l'arte? «Mio padre – risponde con un sorriso la pittrice – si dilettava a disegnare, a scrivere e suonare, ed io passavo ore a guardarlo dipingere. Successivamente ho effettuato studi sempre più specifici ed infine ho conseguito la maturità presso il Liceo Artistico - sezione architettura di Catania. A tutto ciò ho aggiunto gli studi di pianoforte (al Conservatorio "V. Bellini" di Catania, ho conseguito la laurea) ed anche dei corsi di Fotografia che hanno evidenziato ancor di più il mio amore per la ritrattistica».
Uno stile davvero affascinante per tele apprezzate non solo dai siciliani ma anche oltre Stretto. La pittrice, infatti, esporrà a Roma alla galleria "Il mondo dell'arte" di via Margutta dal 23 febbraio al 30 febbraio p.v.. Una personale dove si potranno ammirare circa 20 opere realizzate principalmente negli ultimi mesi e che risentono della nuova tendenza cui si è rivolta l'autrice: l'Islam.
«Mi sono dedicata – spiega Maria Grazia Palermo – allo studio del mondo islamico, delle donne e delle loro usanze. Dipingendo donne coperte dal burka ho cercato di mettere in risalto la loro vera interiorità e non un semplice abito che nasconde tutto ciò che c'è nascosto dietro… Ma così dicendo vorrei approfittare per spiegare il motivo che mi spinge a dipingere nudi di donne. Il corpo diventa un pretesto per esplorare e "mettere a nudo" quello che è nascosto dentro: la ricchezza interiore di ogni donna viene sempre celata (anche nel nostro mondo occidentale) da molteplici veli ed io provo a scoprirli tutti. Questo – prosegue la pittrice – deriva da una profonda ed intensa indagine meditativa alla quale mi sono dedicata negli ultimi anni per ricercare l'ispirazione in quel "quid" che ai più sfugge ma che è celato nella profondità del proprio essere… Grazie alla meditazione – conclude – ho avviato il mio percorso di crescita spirituale attraverso la quiete mentale che mi riduce la sensibilità agli stimoli esterni accentuando quella agli stimoli interni e mi permette così un'osservazione della realtà silente priva di giudizi e pregiudizi e di filtri. Noi esseri umani "siamo molto di più" e dobbiamo cercare di distaccarci dalle nostre debolezze e se possibile guardare dentro noi stessi per ritrovare l'enorme ricchezza che ci contraddistingue!».
La pittura della Palermo è, dunque, molto genuina e non risente di influenze esterne dettate da mode, dettami sociali o altro. La sua è costante ricerca del bello e dello spirituale… non certo dell'artefatto.

We are speaking of the painter Maria Grazia Palermo, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing in her studio—which is also her personal sanctuary—located in the charming Etnean village of Viagrande (CT).

Candles lit, fragrances filling the air, cushions, photographs of her loved ones proudly displayed on her desk, and hundreds of jars, tubes, brushes, and books. A unique world, which—as the painter herself confides—does not always welcome outsiders. I am flattered… perhaps because we are women, or because she wants me to truly "enter" her world and understand her inner self.
Two long hours of conversation, pages upon pages of notebook filled with everything that emerged from a lengthy and engaging interview…
A total immersion, much like what the viewer experiences when stopping to admire her works: portraits, female nudes, flowers, draperies, (clothing) masks, and maternities. Not a whimsical or dreamy style, but one imbued with emotional, social, introspective, and analytical intensity that is genuinely striking.
Maria Grazia has never been indifferent to social issues: she supports the activities of various associations and the Kiwanis International Club of Catania, has been teaching music for twenty-two years at the middle school in Librino, and for eighteen years dedicated herself to youth theater, directing and designing 22 musical productions. In 1997, together with her group, she won first prize (and various other awards) out of 365 schools at the XII National Theater-School Competition "I Fliaci" in Taranto.
But how did her love for art begin?
"My father," she responds with a smile, "used to draw, write, and play music, and I spent hours watching him paint. Later, I pursued increasingly specialized studies, eventually graduating from the Liceo Artistico – Architecture section in Catania. To this, I added piano studies at the Conservatory 'V. Bellini' in Catania, where I earned my degree, as well as photography courses, which further deepened my passion for portraiture."
Her style is truly captivating, with canvases admired not only in Sicily but also beyond the Strait. The artist will soon exhibit in Rome at the gallery "Il Mondo dell'Arte" on Via Margutta from February 23 to February 30, showcasing around twenty works, primarily created in recent months. These reflect a new direction she has embraced: the Islamic world.
"I devoted myself," explains Maria Grazia Palermo, "to studying the Islamic world, women, and their customs. By painting women covered by the burqa, I aimed to highlight their true interiority, not merely the garment that conceals what lies beneath. At the same time, I would like to explain why I paint female nudes. The body becomes a pretext to explore and 'uncover' what is hidden inside: the inner richness of every woman is always concealed—even in our Western world—by multiple veils, and I strive to reveal them all. This," she continues, "stems from a deep, intense meditative inquiry I have undertaken in recent years to seek inspiration in that 'something' that escapes most people but resides deep within oneself. Through meditation," she concludes, "I began my path of spiritual growth, cultivating mental calm that reduces sensitivity to external stimuli while enhancing internal awareness. This allows me to observe reality silently, free from judgments, prejudices, and filters. We human beings 'are much more' and must strive to rise above our weaknesses, and, if possible, look within ourselves to rediscover the enormous richness that defines us."
Maria Grazia Palermo's painting is, therefore, entirely authentic, unaffected by fleeting trends, social dictates, or artificial influences. Her work reflects a constant pursuit of beauty and spirituality… not of the superficial or contrived.
